The Gay Debate

Can Christians agree to disagree on homosexuality?

This question is often posed and it can generate vigorous debate:

Can Christians agree to disagree on our culture’s most controversial topics? Well, when it comes to certain issues [like homosexuality], the answer is no.

John Stonestreet, Christian Post Guest Columnist

A person may follow Jesus, or he may pursue sexual immorality. But he cannot do both. He must choose. One path leads to eternal life, and the other does not.

Denny Burk, President, Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood , link, link, link

WE DENY that sexual attraction for the same sex is part of the natural goodness of God’s
original creation

WE DENY that the approval of homosexual immorality or transgenderism is a matter of moral
indifference about which otherwise faithful Christians should agree to disagree.

Articles 8,10, Nashville Statement, 2017, Coalition for Biblical Sexuality

In response to the Nashville Statement, so-called ‘progressive’ Christians denied that:

Homosexuality, bisexuality, queer sexuality, trans-identity, asexuality, or any other queer identity is sinful, distorted, or outside of God’s created intent

Steve Chalke, Jayne Ozanne, and others, Christians United Statement

But an analysis of the Christians United Statement on sexuality concluded:

The claim made in Christians United that the ideas it contains are a result of the work of the Holy Spirit bringing about a further reformation in the life of the Church needs to be rejected.

Martin Barrett Davie

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth, and, from the Law of Non-contradiction the truth cannot be on both sides of the polarised gay debate! Clearly, from the truth point of view, it seems Christians cannot, and must not, agree to disagree on homosexuality.

So what is the TRUTH? What does the Bible say?

the gay debate

In People to Be Loved, Preston Sprinkle challenges those on all sides of the debate to consider what the Bible says and how we should approach the topic of homosexuality in the light of it. Key questions for Christians include:

  • Is same-sex attraction a product of biological or societal factors or both?
  • how should the church treat people struggling with same-sex attraction?
  • How should the church think about larger cultural issues, such as gay marriage and gay pride?

But what is missing in most debates on this subject is God’s command for holiness. Surely, this fundamental biblical concept makes a powerful definitive stance and draws a line in the sand on the gay debate:

For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, because I am holy …  it is written: “You shall be holy, for I am holy”

Leviticus 11:44, 1 Peter 1:16

The key question:

How can an active (non-celibate) homosexual relationship be holy before God?
