Promises of God

Promises of God to those who trust in Jesus Christ

Key Promises of God to Believers

When we put our trust in the risen Jesus (Hebrew: Yeshua) amazing things happen. Through faith in the saving work of Jesus (He died for mankind on the cross) we can claim the following key promises of God found in the Bible:
  1. We become a completely new person – it’s like being “born again”
  2. We develop a loving relationship with our Creator – the God of Israel
  3. We start a completely new life here on Earth – a life with purpose
  4. We have a safe eternal destiny with God on the New Earth

Promise of God #1: I am a Completely New Person

I am Born Again

Jesus said

Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:3)

promises of God

In God’s sight I am now complete and made whole; I am cleansed and made holy; I am spiritually ‘reborn’ as a new person. I have been ‘re-made’ and am now set apart for use in God’s Kingdom.

I am Reconciled to God

This is where the promises of God really start for each of us – reconciliation to our Creator. I am now accepted by, and reconciled to God:

All of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to Himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to Him (2 Corinthians 5:18)

Through Jesus’ death on the cross I am unconditionally forgiven for all my past and future wrongs in the sight of God. He tasted death and separation from God – for me! And if I confess today’s sins, He will forgive these too. I realise that all this is mine through God’s action alone, by His grace, and by my faith in Christ’s work.

In Him [Jesus] we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace … For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God (Ephesians 1:7, 2:8)

I have Victory over Sin

I am freed from a bondage and darkness that I never really recognised. I was a slave to wrong thoughts and actions, wrong passions and desires (sin), but now Christ has set me free from such things. I now walk by the Light of life [Christ], and no longer walk in darkness.

And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free … if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed (John 8:32, 36)

I have a Renewed Mind

Since I love Jesus, in some mysterious way both the Spirit and mind of Christ dwell within me. So I tend to act and think as He does. This is comforting in a world of philosophers and the high-minded!

We have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16)

I have a Changed Character

I am being trained to be more like Christ each day; to think spiritual thoughts, to speak helpful and timely words, and to be enriched in knowledge. He makes my speech to be like apples of gold in a setting of silver. Like barren branches on a vine, the fruitless parts of my life are being ‘pruned’ away by my Father in heaven. I am developing love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit (John 15:2)

Promise of God #2: I have a Loving Relationship with God

I am Known and Loved by God

I am now at peace with a loving God, and accept Jesus’ gift of peace in this troubled world.

My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you … we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (John 14:27, Romans 5:1)

Nothing can now separate me from God:

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:35-39)

I am Indwelt by God

I now have the Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit) dwelling within me, and so I can relate to God as “Abba, Father”. And through the Spirit I join other believers as a member of the body of Christ, His Church. Jesus said:

If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him … for you are the temple of the living God (John 14:23, 2 Corinthians 6:16)

I am in God’s Book of Life

I am known by name in heaven, and my name is written in the Book of Life (so I will not be judged by God at the end of this age). I am like a son to God, and God is like a Father to me. Jesus calls me His friend if I do what He asks.

Rejoice because your names are written in heaven … (but) anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire (Luke 10:20, Revelation 20:15)

God Hears my Prayers

I can come boldly to my Father in heaven through Christ, our great high priest:

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us ( 1 John 5:14 )

So I can talk directly to my Father in heaven through prayer, even in quiet, secret prayer. And I can talk to Jesus in just the same way! Since I am reconciled to God, Jesus and the Father listen to me and answer my prayer when it glorifies the Father in the Son.

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need … when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you  (Hebrews 4:16, Matthew 6:6)

God Cares for Me

Jesus cares for me as a shepherd cares for his sheep, and my Father knows me and holds me firmly in His hand. So we are not to fear:

The fear of man brings a snare, but one who trusts in the Lord will be protected … My peace I give to you … let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (Proverbs 29:25, John 14:27)

He knows my thoughts and what I am doing. He thinks a great deal about me, and He even numbers the hairs of my head!

The sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out … the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows (John 10:3, Luke 12:7)

Promise of God #3: I have a New Life here on Earth

My Life has Real Purpose

My life is no longer aimless or random, nor is it my own anymore – God has a plan for my life. I have a new purpose in life, and this will lead to a really full and satisfying life. As I delight myself in the Lord He gives me the desires of my heart. I now live for Christ and not myself, and in the name of Jesus I have the authority and power to do great works for Him.

He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again … I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly (2 Corinthians 5:15, John 10:10)

God now Helps Me

I am helped in my new life by the indwelling Holy Spirit. This is one of the really practical promises of God to each believer – to help them in life. He leads me into truth, guides me, teaches me, and helps me to pray.

I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper [Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor], so that He may be with you forever … But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth … In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight (John 14:16, 16:13, Proverbs 3:6)

When the path isn’t clear He will tell me the way:

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go (Psalm 32:8)

When problems arise I can claim the peace of Jesus, and use a very effective weapon, the word of God. I stand firm, protected by truth, righteousness, the assurance of salvation and the shield of faith. So even when sorrowful, I can still rejoice, even when poor I can still make many rich, even with nothing I still possess all things!

I am given Godly Wisdom

I am being given wisdom from above, to replace my worldly thoughts and ideas. If we lack wisdom we can ask God, who will willingly give it. This heavenly wisdom is pure, peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering and without hypocrisy. Such wisdom gives me true knowledge, discretion and understanding.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. The wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, free of hypocrisy ( James 1:5, 3:17)

I have a Comforter

I have someone [Jesus] who understands the grief’s and sorrows of my life. He also has suffered, and through His scourging I count myself healed. As I trust in Him, He gives me new strength. Jesus said we should come to Him when we get weary and burdened in life, and He will give us rest.

Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest …  it was our sicknesses that He Himself bore, and our pains that He carried … and by His wounds we are healed (Matthew 11:28, Isaiah 53:4-5)

Promise of God #4: I have a Safe Eternal Destiny with God

I am Saved from Judgment

I am saved from the anger, wrath and coming judgement of God on a sinful world – a world that ignores God. I am saved from eternal separation from God (Hell) since my name is written in the Book of Life.

Having now been justified by His [Jesus’s] blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him … He who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him. [But] truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life … (Romans 5:9, John 3:36, 5:24)

I have Eternal Life

There will be a New Heaven one day. Image: rabbisacks.org

This is one of the mysterious promises of God – life after this life! Believers in Jesus are eternally safe in the hands of the living God. After death they will be raised with an imperishable, spiritual body and live in a home prepared for them in that heavenly city called “the New Jerusalem”.

It is the believer’s faith in Christ that makes them worthy to rise from the dead, and to enjoy the many good things that God has prepared for them. And through their endeavours on earth they will have stored up treasures (rewards) in heaven. These future times will be like drinking pure water from a crystal-clear spring.

God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life … everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day … I will give water to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life, without cost (John 3:36, 6:40, Revelation 21:6)

I am already a Citizen of Heaven

Since I am now in God’s Kingdom, spiritually speaking I am a citizen of heaven and I am seated with Christ in heavenly places. I am a citizen of the New Jerusalem, and one-day I will walk through her pearly gates and down her street of gold to dine with the Lord at His table!

But God, being rich in mercy … even when we were dead in our wrongdoings, made us alive together with Christ … and seated us with Him in the heavenly places … For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:4-6, Philippians 3:20)
